Threave Gardens – Castle Douglas

Threave June 2026

This was a trip to Threave Gardens in Southern Scotland in early June.   I enjoy Threave as the drive isn't too long from my house and there are if you wish a few coffee stops that can be enjoyed on the way.   The gardens are home to the Scottish National Trust's school of gardening.    The gardens were in fairly good condition considering the weather we have been having in this part of the world - cold and rainy for most of the year so far.   Most of the Rhododendrons had finished flowering but the walled garden was just starting to colour up with its usual blend of annuals, biennials and perennials.   The walled garden also contains the estate's fruit and veg which is used in the coffee shop or if there's a surplus visitors can buy via an "honesty box".    My one gripe with all Trust gardens is that some plants are named whilst others aren't - and as per usual the unnamed ones are sometimes the most interesting.    Still a great day out
